- Chart and Compass Web Site The
Chart & Compass was started as a way for homeschoolers to
communicate--homeschoolers that were from a variety of backgrounds and used
many different methods and styles of homeschooling. We wanted everyone to
feel comfortable sharing their insights and dilemmas, from the homeschooling
mom who always knew this would be her choice to the dad who just pulled his
kid out of school yesterday.

- Design-A-Study I
really like her stuff! Sign up for her tips and read the articles on this
site: Kathryn Stout is a Christian educator, consultant, and speaker. An
honors graduate of the University of Delaware, Kathryn holds a bachelor's
degree in elementary education and a master's degree in special education.
During her eight years in the public schools she taught, tested and
developed programs for students who did not respond to ordinary strategies.
This and her own homeschooling experiences (thirteen years, and a daughter
now in college) led her to write several books that have shown families how
to teach, and allowed them to design a curriculum that meets their specific
needs.

- Homeschooling: The Real
Story by Pussycat Junior Reporter. For many kids all
around the world, homeschooling is an everyday reality. A lot of kids do it,
and a lot of kids like it. In this article, I'll talk about how homeschools
are different from public schools and how they're not so different. I'll
also explain why I think they are better than public schools, or at least
the public schools that I've gone to.
- Homeschool
Headlines Newsletter Great first edition with lots of
articles dealing with the subject of testing. Caution: Stats listed in some
articles are from studies by Dr. Brian Ray that are considered by many to be
biased. Some balance is provided in their "Burning
Questions" section. For a deeper analysis, please see the Kaseman's
article Survey
and Lobbyists Cause Problems for Homeschoolers. in the Sep/Oct HEM.
Dr. Ray has a rebuttal in the Nov/Dec HEM issue. See also Homeschooling
and Research.
- Beware the
Curriculum Mentality One of the most important duties of
parents is to help their children to discover and pursue new interests,
retaining the love of learning that is almost universal in young children
and almost universally extinct in conventionally educated adults.
Standardized curricula, and the stultifying educational hoops that
schoolchildren have to jump through, sabotage this aim. This can cause
trouble for parents who have to satisfy other people (such as LEAs, or
grandparents) that they are educating their children properly. Under
pressure, they may slide into a "homeschooling" mentality that
distorts and damages their children's education.
